Love Your Rebellion has developed Poetry for the People, a free virtual workshop that refines poetry skills while connecting poets with one another.
Running April 9th to May 7th at 8pm via Zoom, Poetry for the People will be hosted by LYR founder, Angela Page. Each 60-minute virtual course will focus on a different poetic technique, providing development exercises while work shopping one poet’s work each class meeting. The first three classes will focus on poetic devices such as imagery, simile, metaphorical and juxtaposition. The fourth class will focus on sound, specifically slant rhymes, and the fifth will focus on the rhythms created by line breaks.
Although each class session will be capped at roughly 15 people, Poetry for the People will be recorded and uploaded to LYR’s social media outlets. No sign up is required, simply join via the link on LYR’s Facebook event or on the LYR website. While workshop is free, donations are appreciated to support this and other LYR nonprofit art programs.
Love Your Rebellion founder Angela Page will be leading each Poetry for the People session. Page has a BA in Creative Writing from the University of Central Florida and an MFA in poetry and critical writing from Goddard College. She is the editor of the LYR zine, and has published several works of poetry in literary journals and magazines. In 2019, Page published a poetry collection titled Speaking with My Second Mouth, which is available on Amazon.
Love Your Rebellion’s mission is to empower marginalized groups through the arts, including women, immigrants, people of color, people from queer and trans communities, people from low income communities and people with disabilities. LYR accomplishes their mission through music events featuring diverse lineups, publications that showcase marginalized voices and operating a Zine Library in East Fort Myers.
